Jamaat-e-Islami Calls for Stronger Family System and Women's Rights at Lahore Conference

Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has urged women to prioritize the strengthening of the family system, a structure he believes is a bulwark against the decline seen in Western societies. Addressing the 'Protection of Women as a Fundamental Right' conference at the PC Hotel, Rehman emphasized that while the Western family system is in ruins, Pakistan's remains relatively strong. He encouraged women to focus on the upbringing of children and to use social media constructively.

The conference, organized by the Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Women's Wing, featured several prominent speakers who voiced concerns over the increasing violence against women. Dr. Humaira Tariq, Secretary General of the Women’s Wing, described the family as the "basic unit of human society" with women as its "beating heart." She underscored that the health of a society depends on educated, empowered, and healthy women, and their protection is a fundamental right guaranteed by every religion and law. Dr. Tariq also stated that Islamic society ensures the dignity, honor, and protection of women.

Dr. Sameeha Raheel Qazi noted the sacrifices Muslim women have made to preserve modesty and the hijab. She lamented that society's drift from these values has contributed to rising incidents of violence. Dr. Qazi also pointed out that while traditional customs have deprived women of their rights, the pursuit of "unbridled freedom" by some has collectively undermined respect for women.

Echoing these concerns, Deputy Secretary Samina Saeed highlighted the alarming increase in crimes like sexual and physical violence, honor killings, and harassment in Pakistan. She attributed this trend to weak law implementation and a lack of effective punishment. Saeed added that women are not only deprived of basic rights but also face humiliation and violence, both at home and in public, with justice delivery for victims remaining extremely low.

The Jamaat-e-Islami Women’s Wing reaffirmed its commitment to struggling for women’s rights in health, education, and Shariah, and noted its consistent work to ensure justice for women. The organization also highlighted its efforts in raising a voice against the oppression faced by women in Kashmir and Palestine.

Participants of the conference collectively put forth the following demands to the government and society:

  • Effective implementation of women’s protection laws and the provision of immediate justice.

  • Strict punishments and the establishment of fast-track courts to eliminate violence against women.

  • State-level measures to safeguard Islamic values and the right to hijab.

  • Formulation of effective policies in educational institutions and media to promote modesty and respect.

  • Strict action against online harassment and hateful campaigns targeting women.

The conference was also addressed by Dr. Zubaida Jabeen, Nazia Touheed, Uzma Imran, and Dr. Nusrat Tariq.
