Iran Hosts Saudi, Pakistani and Turkish Officials for De-escalation Talks in Tehran
TEHRAN, October 26 (Nazrana Times): Senior security officials from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and senior security official Mohsen Rezaei in Tehran on Monday for talks aimed at reducing regional tensions.
The visiting delegation included Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces and Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, and İbrahim Kalın, director of Türkiye’s National Intelligence Organization.
Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, hosted the meeting. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also attended the four-country session.
Pakistan Proposed the Meeting
According to a senior Iranian official, Pakistan initiated the meeting during Munir’s visit to Tehran the previous week, when he held discussions with Pezeshkian and other senior officials.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said Iran agreed to the four-country meeting following Munir’s proposal. Ali Bagheri Kani, deputy secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said Munir had announced the decision during discussions with Rezaei.
Focus on Regionally Led Security
The talks sought to ease tensions and strengthen diplomatic coordination amid continuing hostilities involving the United States, Israel and Iran, alongside increased Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia.
Bagheri Kani said participants would work towards a security framework developed within West Asia, emphasising that countries in the region should guarantee their own security without foreign interference.
Saudi Deputy Minister for Public Diplomacy Dr Rayed Krimly said the delegation was seeking ways to reduce tensions, strengthen regional security and promote stability.
Makkah Joint Defence Agreement
The three visiting countries are signatories to the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, signed on August 7, 2026. Under the agreement, an armed attack against one member is considered an attack against all three, with mutual defence commitments lasting at least ten years.
Described as a NATO-style collective security arrangement, the pact provides the backdrop to Monday’s meeting, reported as the first high-level engagement between Iran and all three members since its activation.
Mohsin Naqvi’s Broader Mediation Role
Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi was not part of Monday’s delegation but has participated in the broader mediation process.
He accompanied Munir on an earlier visit to Tehran, where they met Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni. Sources said Naqvi had also been involved in Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach between Washington and Tehran.
Diplomatic Efforts Continue
Qatari mediators travelled to Tehran on Sunday as part of continuing efforts to ease tensions in coordination with the United States.
Iran has maintained that it remains open to diplomacy while reserving its right to defend itself. The meeting provides a direct channel for the four countries to discuss shared security priorities, although its impact will depend on concrete steps towards de-escalation.
