Tarn Taran to Become Punjab’s First Drug-Free District: Cheema

In a major step under the 'War Against Drugs' campaign, the civil and police administration of Tarn Taran assured Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema, Punjab’s Finance Minister and Chairman of the Cabinet Sub-Committee, that Tarn Taran will become Punjab’s first drug-free district.
During a meeting with police and civil administration officials, Finance Minister Cheema directed authorities to ensure active public participation in the anti-drug campaign. He reviewed de-addiction activities and emphasized the importance of encouraging youth to engage in sports, educational competitions, and a healthy lifestyle.
Cheema instructed the police administration to take strict action against drug traffickers and seize their properties. Tarn Taran SSP Abhimanyu Rana reported that assets worth ₹26 crore were attached last year, and ₹2 crore worth of assets have been attached so far this year. He further disclosed that 80 individuals have been arrested under the NDPS Act, and 13 kg of heroin has been confiscated.
On this occasion, Cabinet Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar, MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura, MLA Dr. Kashmir Singh Sohal, and other officials shared their views. Manjinder Singh Lalpura stated that 80 villages in his constituency have passed resolutions banning drug sales, while 87 villages will be provided with volleyball kits to promote sports among the youth.
Addressing the media, Finance Minister Cheema reaffirmed the Punjab government’s commitment to eradicating drug trade. He stated that efforts are underway to bring back overseas drug traffickers to face legal action. Additionally, he announced that border district police will soon be equipped with anti-drone technology to curb drug smuggling from across the border.
