PSL 11 TO PROCEED BEHIND CLOSED DOORS AMID NATIONAL CRISIS
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi Announces Major Revisions to Tournament Format
LAHORE ! Nazrana Times! March 22, 2026: Ali Imran Chattha
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has confirmed that the 11th edition of the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL 11) will proceed as scheduled, but under significantly revised conditions following a series of national and regional challenges, including a fuel and petroleum crisis, heightened security concerns, and government mandated austerity measures.
TOURNAMENT DATES REMAIN UNCHANGED
Despite widespread speculation over a possible postponement, Naqvi confirmed the tournament will commence on March 26, 2026, as originally planned, with the final set for May 3, 2026, and a reserve day on May 4, 2026. The PCB Chairman ruled out any delay, citing the congested international cricket calendar and the disruption a postponement would cause to player commitments and franchise operations.
MATCHES TO BE PLAYED BEHIND CLOSED DOORS
In the most significant departure from tradition, all PSL 11 matches will be played behind closed doors with no spectators or live audiences permitted inside the stadiums. The decision marks a sharp contrast to the electric atmosphere that has come to define the PSL experience over the past decade.
The move follows fuel and petroleum shortages that have severely restricted public transport and large-scale gatherings across the country. Security concerns stemming from ongoing regional tensions in West Asia and the Middle East, as well as domestic stability considerations, further necessitated the restriction.
VENUES CUT FROM SIX TO TWO CITIES
In a major logistical overhaul, the PCB has scrapped plans for a six-city hosting format. Matches will now be confined exclusively to:
Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore
National Bank Stadium, Karachi
Earlier plans had included Rawalpindi, Multan, Peshawar, and Faisalabad the latter two set to host PSL matches for the very first time. Those arrangements have been shelved indefinitely. The centralization to two venues is aimed at reducing travel demands, conserving fuel resources, and simplifying security deployments across the tournament.
OPENING CEREMONY CANCELLED
The grand opening ceremony, traditionally one of the most anticipated pre-tournament spectacles, has been cancelled entirely. No alternative celebration or curtailed event has been announced in its place.
FULL REFUNDS FOR TICKETHOLDERS
Fans who had purchased tickets for any PSL 11 matches will receive full refunds. The PCB has stated the refund process will commence immediately and be completed within 48 to 72 hours. Further details regarding the refund mechanism are expected to be communicated through official PCB channels, including the PCB website and authorised ticketing partner TCS.

FRANCHISES TO BE COMPENSATED FOR GATE REVENUE LOSSES
Acknowledging the financial blow to the eight franchises, the PCB has committed to fully compensating all franchise owners for the loss of gate revenue resulting from the closed-door format. The compensation framework was agreed upon following consultations between Naqvi, franchise representatives, and government authorities, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in his capacity as PCB Patron-in-Chief.
DECISION BACKED BY GOVERNMENT AND SECURITY ASSESSMENTS
Naqvi emphasised that the final decision followed extensive consultations with franchise owners, federal government authorities, and national security agencies. Postponement, he stressed, was not a viable option given the absence of any suitable alternative window in the packed international cricket calendar.
No confirmed withdrawals from overseas players have been reported to date, despite earlier speculation over foreign player travel concerns linked to regional tensions.
BROADCAST TO CONTINUE NATIONWIDE AND GLOBALLY
Despite the closed door format, all PSL 11 matches will be broadcast live across Pakistan and internationally through regular broadcast partners, including PTV Sports and A Sports. Fans unable to attend and now all fans are urged to follow the action from home.
TOURNAMENT FORMAT: FIRST EDITION WITH EIGHT TEAMS
PSL 11 marks a historic expansion of the league, being the first edition to feature eight franchises, with newly introduced sides including the Hyderabad Kingsmen. The tournament comprises 44 matches across the league stage, playoffs including Qualifier 1, the Eliminator, and Qualifier 2 and the final.
The opening fixture on March 26 is set to pit defending champions Lahore Qalandars against Hyderabad Kingsmen at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. A revised venue specific fixture list is expected to be released shortly by the PCB.
FAN REACTION: DISAPPOINTMENT TEMPERED BY RELIEF
Public reaction on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), has been mixed. Many fans expressed disappointment over the absence of live crowds long considered the lifeblood of PSL's vibrant identity while others voiced relief that the tournament has not been cancelled outright.
A recurring sentiment among supporters framed the decision as a pragmatic necessity under extraordinary national circumstances, with the PCB's effort to preserve the league seen as a commitment to Pakistan cricket amid testing times.
Fans and stakeholders are advised to monitor official PCB channels for updated fixtures, refund procedures, and any further developments ahead of the March 26 opening.
