Chandigarh Mangat Singh Saidpur -The Punjab Government has reconstituted the Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the 2015 Behbal Kalan firing case. Under the new arrangement, Ferozepur Range DIG Gurpreet Singh has been removed from the SIT.
The reconstituted team includes Malerkotla SSP Gurmeet Singh, Amritsar ADCP Harpal Singh, and Sangrur DSP Dalbir Singh as members.
The Behbal Kalan firing incident remains one of Punjab’s most sensitive and controversial cases. The incident occurred in October 2015 when police opened fire on protesters near Behbal Kalan village in Faridkot district. The protesters were demonstrating against incidents of desecration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
Two Sikh protesters, Krishan Bhagwan Singh of Nihalgarh and Gurjit Singh of Sarawan, lost their lives in the firing, while several others sustained injuries.
Over the years, multiple SITs have been formed and various court proceedings have taken place regarding the case. Questions have continuously been raised about the chain of command behind the firing, the role of police officials, and the accountability of the then government.
The latest restructuring of the SIT is being viewed as an effort to expedite the investigation and bring the long-pending case closer to its conclusion.
Victims’ families and Sikh organizations have consistently demanded justice for those killed in the firing and strict action against all those found responsible.
