Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan would not pursue confrontation with the military or Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir if he were released, according to a close aide.
According to an exclusive Reuters report, Zulfiqar Bukhari, a close associate and PTI spokesperson, said that if Imran Khan is released, he would not adopt a policy of confrontation with the military. Bukhari also indicated that there could be room for the Army Chief to extend a hand for “healing and reconciliation.”
Bukhari said Imran Khan would not take any action that could harm the country. However, he clarified that there are currently no negotiations taking place between PTI and the military.
The remarks are significant in the context of PTI’s previously confrontational political narrative. Imran Khan and his party have expressed strong political differences with the government and military leadership in recent years, while PTI has described Khan’s imprisonment and cases against him as politically motivated. Khan has himself alleged political motives behind the cases against him.
The development comes as Pakistan’s Supreme Court on August 18 ordered that Imran Khan be shifted from prison to a private hospital in Islamabad for medical treatment. The government subsequently challenged the decision through legal proceedings.
Reuters also reported that PTI has planned nationwide protests on September 27 to demand Imran Khan’s release and protection of his rights.
Important clarification: The statement that Imran Khan would not confront the military leadership was not made directly by Imran Khan. It was conveyed to Reuters by his close aide and PTI spokesperson Zulfiqar Bukhari.
