ISLAMABAD:President Asif Ali Zardari launched a fierce diplomatic offensive on Thursday, fully endorsing a damning United Nations report and accusing India of operating as a "rogue state" and a "global bully" whose aggressive actions threaten international peace.
In a strongly-worded statement from the Presidency, Zardari welcomed the findings of UN human rights experts, which he said exposed India's "grave breach" of Pakistani sovereignty during its military actions in May. The President detailed civilian deaths and damage to religious sites, labeling the violations "deeply disturbing."
The condemnation escalated sharply as Zardari targeted India's reported move to sideline the Indus Waters Treaty, calling it an act of "irresponsible state behaviour" that flouts binding international law and risks humanitarian consequences for Pakistan.
"This pattern of rogue behaviour cannot continue indefinitely," Zardari declared, pointing to what he called a dangerous normalization of coercion and force. He cited the UN report's alleged references to India's involvement in "transnational violence and targeted killings" as evidence of a threat extending beyond the region.
The President forcefully rejected any legal pretext for India's cross-border strikes, stating, "International law does not recognise any separate right to unilateral military action under the guise of counter-terrorism." He simultaneously affirmed Pakistan's inherent right to self-defence.
While reaffirming Pakistan's commitment to peaceful dialogue, including on Jammu and Kashmir, Zardari vowed to pursue all diplomatic and legal avenues to hold India accountable, safeguard national sovereignty, and protect the rights of the Pakistani people.
