Indian Government Forms Committee to Review MP Amritpal Singh’s Membership and Absence from Parliament

New Delhi, February 25 Jugraj Singh Sarhali

The Indian government has formed a committee to review the parliamentary membership and absence of Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh. This committee, constituted by the Lok Sabha Speaker, has been assigned the responsibility of analyzing the case and submitting a report.

The Punjab-Haryana High Court recently questioned the Central Government regarding whether there exists a specific committee to approve leave for Members of Parliament (MPs). The Division Bench directed Additional Solicitor General Satya Pal Jain to seek instructions from the Centre and inform the court by February 25.

Amritpal Singh’s Petition

Amritpal Singh, who has been detained under the National Security Act (NSA) in Assam since 2023, filed a petition seeking permission to participate in Lok Sabha proceedings.

His legal representatives argued that he had submitted an application for leave to attend parliamentary sessions and fulfill his duties, but he had not received any official response.

Additional Requests in the Petition

Apart from seeking permission to attend Parliament, Amritpal Singh has also requested approval to participate in meetings with officials and ministers under the MP Local Area Development Scheme.

The Centre is set to present its response in the High Court on February 25, which will determine whether Amritpal Singh will be allowed to attend parliamentary proceedings or not.
