Patiala | February 3, 2026 (Nazrana Times)
Yadavindra Public School (YPS), Patiala, commemorated the 140th anniversary of the historic Aitchison College, Lahore, on Tuesday.
The ceremony was attended by four living alumni of Aitchison College, who were specially honored for their lifelong association with the institution. The honored alumni included Simran Singh Bhadaur, Harinder Singh Attari, Jitinder Singh Chimni, and Malwinder Singh Sodhi, all of whom studied at Aitchison College until the partition of the subcontinent in 1947.

At the time of partition, around 160 of the nearly 265 students at Aitchison College were Sikh and Hindu, who later migrated to India. Maharaja Yadvindra Singh of Patiala played a historic role by generously offering his stadium to ensure the continuation of their education. He also appointed Dhani Ram Kapila, then Principal of Aitchison College, as the Headmaster of YPS Patiala, while Aitchison’s teacher and hockey coach Harnam Singh Bal was appointed Assistant Headmaster.
Aitchison College was founded in 1886, with Maharaja of Patiala contributing Rs. 50,000 to its building fund. Maharaja Bhupinder Singh and his son Maharaja Yadvindra Singh were among the prominent alumni of the institution, along with several members of the Patiala royal family.
While Aitchison College is scheduled to officially celebrate its 140th anniversary in Lahore from February 13 to 15, YPS Patiala marked the milestone with deep respect and historical pride.
