"WhoFi Wi-Fi Tech Can Identify People Through Walls, Stirring Global Privacy Debate"

A team at La Sapienza University has revealed a controversial surveillance system, WhoFi, capable of identifying individuals using ordinary Wi-Fi signals—even through walls and in darkness.

The technology, which achieves 95.5% accuracy, works by analyzing Channel State Information (CSI) from standard routers. An AI-powered transformer model then turns these signal patterns into unique biometric profiles. Unlike cameras, WhoFi requires no light, wearable devices, or visible sensors, making it nearly impossible to detect.

Potential uses range from non-invasive elderly fall detection to discreet intruder identification and retail analytics. Yet privacy advocates warn of grave risks, including mass surveillance, inability to opt out, and loopholes in biometric privacy laws like the EU’s GDPR.

Authorities in the EU are calling for preemptive regulation, while tech giants in the U.S. and state actors in China are reportedly exploring similar tools. Military interest has also been reported, raising further ethical alarms.

Lead researcher Dr. Francesca Meneghello insists the project’s aim is assistive technology, but cybersecurity experts caution that in the wrong hands, it could be “more invasive than facial recognition.”

Public reaction is sharply divided, with some hailing it as a revolution in safety, and others calling for an outright ban.
