In an important meeting today, the Punjab Cabinet decided to make significant changes to the birth and death registration rules. Now, the authority to amend birth and death records will rest with the Deputy Commissioner. Previously, these changes required approval from a magistrate, but that requirement has now been removed.
Additionally, the cabinet has approved a new excise policy, under which liquor contracts will continue to be auctioned through the e-tendering process.
During the meeting, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema claimed that Punjab has achieved a revenue of ₹10,200 crore for the financial year 2024-25.
Another key decision involved amendments to the Water Pollution Act. Under the new rules, individuals or organizations found guilty of polluting water sources will face fines ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹15 lakh. This step aims to protect Punjab’s water bodies and underground water sources from chemical waste and contamination. The government stated that these changes are crucial for safeguarding the state’s water resources.
