1984 Sikh Riots: Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar Sentenced to Life Imprisonment

Chandigarh, February 25 ( Sodh Singh Baaz)

In a significant development in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, a Delhi court on Tuesday sentenced former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar to life imprisonment. The verdict was delivered by Special Judge Kaveri Baweja at Rouse Avenue Court post 2 PM.

It is noteworthy that the court had reserved its decision on the sentencing on February 21, following Sajjan Kumar’s conviction on February 12. The case pertains to the murder of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh in Saraswati Vihar during the riots.

The victim’s family had demanded the death penalty for Sajjan Kumar, arguing for the harshest possible punishment. However, the court handed down a life sentence, marking a significant ruling in the decades-old case.

This decision is expected to have a lasting impact on similar pending cases related to the 1984 Sikh riots, which witnessed large-scale violence and loss of Sikh lives across India, particularly in Delhi.
