The prominent Sikh organization ‘Kaltura Sikh’ in Italy has announced a unique initiative to serve Guru’s Langar only in the traditional Pangat (community sitting) format at the first Nagar Kirtan of 2025.
With the beginning of the new Nanakshahi Samvat 557, this organization is making efforts to reinstate the Guru-ordained practice of ‘First Pangat, Then Sangat’ to ensure adherence to Sikh traditions. During Italy’s first Nagar Kirtan of the year, the focus will be on maintaining the sanctity of Langar by ensuring that it is served only in a proper sitting arrangement. The organization has appealed to all Gurdwara management committees and Sikh communities to join hands in this movement, ensuring that Langar is served only in Pangat at every Gurdwara Sahib and religious gathering.
Concerns Over Disrespect of Langar During Nagar Kirtans:
In recent years, some Nagar Kirtans in Italy have witnessed unintentional violations of Langar Maryada, as devotees sometimes consume food while standing or walking, which does not align with Sikh principles. Despite best efforts, managing large gatherings while maintaining the sanctity of Langar has been a challenge for the organizers.
To curb such incidents, Kaltura Sikh organization will officially implement this initiative on March 16 at Gurdwara Sahib Hargobind Sahib in Leno (Brescia), Italy. However, the long-term success of this effort in all Nagar Kirtans across Italy remains uncertain, as large gatherings often pose logistical challenges in ensuring a proper Pangat Langar arrangement for all attendees.
Former Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh Supports the Initiative:
Former Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh has lauded this initiative and expressed strong support for the efforts to ensure Langar is served in complete accordance with Sikh traditions.
