Historic Milestone: Navraj Singh Rai Becomes First Sikh Judge in Kern County Superior Court

In a landmark achievement for the Sikh community in the United States, Navraj Singh Rai has been appointed and sworn in as a judge in the Superior Court of California, Kern County, marking him as the first Sikh to hold this position in the county.
The announcement and oath-taking ceremony, which took place recently, has sparked widespread celebration among Sikhs in the diaspora and beyond. Photos shared on social media show Judge Rai, adorned in his traditional dastar (turban), taking the bench in a Pro Tem capacity, symbolizing a proud moment where Sikh identity and judicial service intersect in Kern County (including Bakersfield).
A former Deputy District Attorney in Kern County, Navraj Singh Rai brings extensive experience in criminal law and trial advocacy. He graduated with a degree in Political Science from the University of California, Davis, at the age of 19 and earned his Juris Doctor from the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law. Known affectionately as "Navi," he has been recognized for his courtroom success, community involvement, and mentorship of young professionals. His background includes active participation in charitable initiatives and local non-profits, such as events with the Sikh Riders of America.

This appointment follows a growing representation of Sikhs in U.S. judicial roles. While other Sikh judges, such as Raj Singh Badhesha in Fresno County (appointed in 2024 as the first turbaned Sikh judge in that area), have made history in California, Judge Rai's role in Kern County represents a first for this region and highlights the increasing diversity on the bench.
