Pakistan Mediates Historic US–Iran Agreement

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday signed the ‘Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding’ in his role as mediator, marking a significant diplomatic breakthrough between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The memorandum, described as historic, has also been signed by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, signalling a rare moment of cooperation between the two nations.
Announcing the development earlier in the day, Prime Minister Sharif stated on his official X account, “I am honoured to announce that the historic ‘Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding’ has been electronically signed today between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran. The memorandum has been signed by the honourable presidents of both countries and endorsed by me as mediator.”
He further noted that the agreement would come into force immediately. As part of the initial measures, Iran will reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz without delay, while the United States will lift its naval blockade.
The agreement is being seen as a major step towards easing tensions in the region and restoring stability to critical global trade routes.
