Five-Hour Lahore-Karachi Journey: Bullet Train on Track for 2030 Launch

LAHORE — Ali Imran Chattha:

Pakistan Railways has announced an ambitious plan to launch the country’s first bullet train service between Lahore and Karachi by 2030, a landmark step under the $6.8 billion Main Line-1 (ML-1) project, part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The high-speed train will cut the 18–22 hour journey between the two cities to just five hours, with speeds of up to 250 km/h. Major stops are planned at Multan, Sahiwal, and Hyderabad, connecting key economic centers across Punjab and Sindh.

Officials say the bullet train will provide a cheaper alternative to domestic air travel, with expected ticket prices ranging between PKR 5,000 and PKR 10,000, compared to current airfares of PKR 20,000–30,000.

Backbone of Modernization

The bullet train is tied to the ML-1 overhaul, which spans 1,687 km from Karachi to Peshawar. The project includes double tracks, modern signaling, over 500 rebuilt bridges, and elimination of 700+ level crossings. This upgrade is expected to increase Pakistan Railways’ freight share from 4% to 20% by 2030.

Economic and Environmental Gains

Analysts project thousands of new jobs, reduced fuel imports, fewer road accidents, and lower carbon emissions. By shifting cargo and passengers from road to rail, Pakistan could save billions of dollars annually.

Timeline and Partnership

According to officials, the feasibility study will conclude in June 2025, construction will begin in 2026, and testing will take place in 2029. The project is being developed with China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC).

Challenges Ahead

Observers caution that the project faces hurdles including funding bottlenecks, management efficiency, and political continuity. Past delays in rail modernization make execution critical.

A Broader Rail Vision

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has also approved a Lahore–Rawalpindi high-speed rail link, set to reduce travel to just 2.5 hours, signaling Pakistan’s wider commitment to rail modernization.

The Lahore-Karachi bullet train, if completed on schedule, will redefine national connectivity, boost economic growth, and position Pakistan among countries with advanced rail systems.
