Pakistan, Iran Vow Stronger Cooperation Amid Regional Tensions

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif held high-level talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad on Saturday, focusing on bilateral relations and evolving regional challenges.
The meeting, attended by senior officials from both sides, including Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, reviewed key areas of cooperation including trade, energy, and border security.

Both countries expressed satisfaction over the progress in bilateral relations, noting that trade volume reached approximately $2.5 billion in the last fiscal year. The two sides agreed to further enhance economic cooperation and accelerate work on the long-delayed Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project, which is expected to play a crucial role in addressing Pakistan’s energy needs.
Discussions also focused on strengthening border security along the 909-kilometre shared frontier. Both nations committed to enhanced coordination through joint patrols and intelligence sharing to combat terrorism and smuggling. Officials noted that recent cooperation has already led to a significant reduction in cross-border incidents.
Regional developments, particularly tensions in the Middle East, also featured prominently in the talks. Pakistan highlighted its role in facilitating a recent ceasefire between the United States and Iran and reiterated its commitment to promoting dialogue and de-escalation.
The situation in Afghanistan and the humanitarian crisis in Palestine were also discussed, with both sides emphasizing the need for peaceful resolutions and stability in the region.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed the deep-rooted ties between Pakistan and Iran, describing the relationship as based on shared history, culture, and faith. He emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening cooperation across all sectors while continuing to support diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing regional tensions.

Foreign Minister Araghchi appreciated Pakistan’s balanced and constructive role in regional affairs and expressed Iran’s interest in expanding economic engagement, particularly in energy and infrastructure projects.
Both sides agreed to maintain regular high-level contacts and expedite ongoing initiatives to further solidify bilateral relations.
The meeting concluded on a positive note, reflecting mutual commitment to peace, stability, and stronger cooperation in the region.
