Punjab Extends Section 144 Until March 14; Strict Action Warned Against Weapon Display as Ali Al-Murtaza Martyrdom Processions Allowed with Security
Lahore Nazrana Times 8 March 2026
Report Ali Imran Chattha
The Punjab government has extended the enforcement of Section 144 across the entire province for an additional seven days, effective immediately until March 14, 2026. This follows the initial imposition on March 1, 2026, in response to violent protests sparked by the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in U.S.Israeli strikes.
A fresh notification from the Punjab Home Department reiterates the ban on public gatherings of four or more people, rallies, processions, sit-ins, demonstrations, or any unauthorized assemblies without prior permission from the relevant Deputy Commissioner. Authorities have emphasized zero tolerance for violations, with strict legal action promised against offenders. According to the Spokesman Tauseef Sabih Gondal, the order also maintains a complete prohibition on the display, carrying, or use of weapons (including licensed firearms) in public places, also applicable to all private security guards who accompany politicians, religious leaders, business figures, and all citizens alike.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed rigorous implementation, instructing the Home Secretary, district administrations, and police to enhance surveillance, conduct combing operations, and maintain high alert to safeguard public peace, lives, and property.
Key Exemptions Remain in Place:
Wedding ceremonies and related family functions.
Funeral prayers, burials, and mourning gatherings.
Official meetings in government or semi government offices.
Court proceedings and judicial activities.
Duties of law enforcement and security personnel.
In a significant clarification amid the ongoing Iran-related tensions and approaching religious observances, Punjab Home Department Spokesman confirmed that mourning processions marking the martyrdom of the Caliphate of the Muslims, Sayyiduna Ali al-Murtada (on the 21st of Ramadan), will be permitted under specific rules. Furthermore, foolproof security arrangements will be provided to ensure their safe conduct, balancing religious sentiments with public order requirements.
The extension is driven by persistent terrorism threats, intelligence alerts, and the risk of further unrest from political and religious groups reacting to regional developments involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
Violent protests erupted nationwide following Khamenei's reported killing, with major clashes in Karachi (where protesters attempted to storm the U.S. Consulate, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries), Lahore (near the U.S. Consulate amid tear gas and baton charges), and Gilgit (where curfews were imposed after deadly confrontations and property damage, including torched buildings).
Residents of Lahore and Punjab are urged to comply fully with the restrictions avoid unauthorized crowds or public weapon displays to prevent risks or legal repercussions.
