Pakistan observed the martyrdom anniversary of Hazrat Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA)—the fourth Caliph of Islam and cousin as well as son-in-law of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)—on Wednesday (21st Ramadan 1447 AH) with deep religious devotion. Mourning processions, majalis (religious gatherings), and matami rituals were held across the country, drawing millions of devotees. Extensive security arrangements ensured the day passed peacefully without any major untoward incident.
Lahore:
The central procession began from the historic Mubarak Haveli near Mochi Gate in the Walled City and passed through its traditional routes before concluding at Karbala Gamay Shah at sunset. Thousands of mourners paid tribute to Hazrat Ali’s (RA) legacy of justice, courage, and devotion to Islam. Punjab Police deployed thousands of personnel, supported by CCTV surveillance, drone monitoring, and multiple security checkpoints. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had earlier directed authorities to ensure foolproof security for all processions and gatherings.
Karachi:
The main Youm-e-Ali majlis was held at Nishtar Park, attracting a large congregation. The central procession later moved along designated routes before concluding at Hussainia Iranian Imambargah in Kharadar. More than 22,000 police personnel, along with Rangers and other paramilitary forces, were deployed across the city. Key roads in Saddar and surrounding areas were secured with container barriers. Sindh’s Interior Minister personally reviewed security arrangements along major procession routes.
Islamabad, Rawalpindi & Other Cities:
Mourning processions and religious gatherings were also organized in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, and across Azad Jammu & Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. Local administrations reported that all events concluded peacefully. Authorities coordinated closely with organizers while maintaining security cordons and emergency response teams throughout the day.
Security Measures:
Law enforcement agencies implemented multi-layered security nationwide, including deployment of tens of thousands of police and paramilitary personnel, walk-through gates, security checkpoints, quadcopter drone surveillance, real-time CCTV monitoring, and dedicated mobile emergency teams. Official reports confirmed that no major security incident occurred anywhere in the country.
Significance of the Day:
Hazrat Ali (RA) was martyred on 21st Ramadan, 40 AH (661 CE), after being struck during Fajr prayers in Kufa. Revered throughout the Muslim world for his wisdom, justice, and bravery, his martyrdom holds profound spiritual significance. During majalis across Pakistan, scholars urged people to follow his teachings by promoting justice, honesty, compassion, and unity in society.
