Pakistan Invites Global Sikh Community to Invest in Proposed Guru Nanak Expressway
Kartarpur–Nankana Sahib connectivity project aims to boost religious tourism, attract foreign investment and improve facilities for Sikh pilgrims
ISLAMABAD (Nazrana Times): Pakistan has invited Sikh communities living in the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States to invest in the proposed Guru Nanak Expressway, an infrastructure initiative designed to strengthen connectivity between two of Sikhism’s most sacred religious destinations, Kartarpur Sahib and Nankana Sahib.
Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan said the proposed expressway holds immense religious, historical and spiritual significance for Sikhs worldwide. He emphasised that the project is intended to be developed in accordance with international infrastructure standards, providing modern transportation facilities and improving access for pilgrims visiting Pakistan.
Strengthening Connectivity Between Sacred Sikh Sites
The proposed Guru Nanak Expressway aims to establish improved road connectivity between Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, associated with the final years of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s life, and Gurdwara Janam Asthan in Nankana Sahib, his birthplace.
Both religious destinations attract Sikh devotees from across the world, particularly during major religious occasions and pilgrimage programmes.
Earlier development proposals envisaged modern three-lane highways, enhanced road safety measures and improved travel facilities to make journeys between the two destinations safer and more convenient.
Investment Opportunities for Overseas Sikhs
The Pakistani government is seeking to attract international investment, particularly from Sikh communities settled in the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States.
Beyond highway construction, the initiative is expected to create opportunities for investment in hospitality, accommodation, shopping facilities and other tourism-related services around important Sikh religious destinations.
The government views international participation as an opportunity to support infrastructure development while encouraging economic activity in areas connected with religious tourism.
Promoting Religious Tourism and Economic Development
The proposed expressway forms part of Pakistan’s broader ambition to strengthen religious tourism by improving accessibility to historically significant Sikh heritage sites.
Better transport links could facilitate pilgrim movement, encourage tourism-related businesses and generate economic opportunities for surrounding communities.
The government’s latest investment initiative seeks to position the Guru Nanak Expressway not merely as a transportation project but as a potential centre for international investment, religious tourism and heritage development.
By reaching out directly to overseas Sikh communities, Pakistan hopes to attract financial participation and strengthen the country’s position as a destination for Sikh religious pilgrimage.
However, the project’s final investment structure, construction schedule, funding commitments and completion date have not been specified in the information released so far.
The proposed Guru Nanak Expressway represents an effort to combine modern infrastructure development with the preservation and promotion of Sikh religious heritage in Pakistan.
