WASHINGTON/ERBIL (Nazrana Times) — A viral social-media post claiming that Iraqi Kurds have “pledged allegiance” to the United States and are now serving as President Donald Trump’s non-Western “boots on the ground” inside Iran is circulating online, but available reporting does not substantiate the claim.

The post, attributed to an X account using the name “charlie ward,” declares that Trump has achieved the “impossible” by securing non-Western forces on the ground in Iran. It further claims that Iraqi Kurds have pledged allegiance to the United States. No evidence or official source is provided in the screenshot to support either assertion.

What Reliable Reporting Shows

There is a factual background that may have contributed to the viral narrative. Earlier this year, the United States held discussions with Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based in northern Iraq about their potential role against Tehran. Reuters reported in March that Iranian Kurdish groups had consulted with U.S. officials over possible operations against Iranian security forces, but at that stage no final decision had been made. 

That is significantly different from saying that Iraqi Kurds collectively pledged allegiance to Washington or that Kurdish forces had become American ground troops inside Iran.

In March, the Kurdistan Regional Government publicly disputed allegations that Iraqi Kurdistan was participating in a plan to send Kurdish opposition forces into Iran. Kurdish officials also expressed concern that such an operation could drag their autonomous region deeper into the conflict. 

President Trump himself subsequently said that he did not want Kurdish forces entering Iran, according to reporting at the time. 

Iranian Kurds and Iraqi Kurds Are Not the Same

A key distinction frequently lost in social-media posts is between the Iraqi Kurdish authorities and Peshmerga and Iranian Kurdish opposition organizations based in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Some Iranian Kurdish opposition organizations have long maintained fighters and bases in northern Iraq and oppose Tehran. An August report said several such organizations denied receiving U.S. military assistance, while the Kurdistan Regional Government had urged them to avoid activities that could threaten the security of Iraqi Kurdistan. 

The latest situation in Iraqi Kurdistan also cuts against the simplistic viral narrative. The Associated Press reported on September 15 that the remaining U.S. troops in northern Iraq were preparing to leave by the September 30 deadline. AP reported that northern Iraq had, for the most part, not served as an offensive platform during the Iran war. 

CENTCOM nevertheless says Washington intends to continue security cooperation with Iraqi and Kurdish forces after the coalition mission in Iraq concludes. 

Bottom Line

As of September 21, 2026, there is credible reporting about U.S. contacts with Iranian Kurdish opposition groups and earlier discussions about their possible role in the Iran conflict. However, I found no reliable confirmation that Iraqi Kurds have “pledged allegiance” to the United States or that Trump currently has Kurdish forces operating inside Iran as American “boots on the ground.”

The phrase “This is undeniably GENIUS” in the viral post is political commentary rather than a verifiable news fact.
