PM Shehbaz Sharif, Iranian President Pezeshkian Reaffirm Bilateral Ties at SCO Meeting

Prime Minister of Pakistan Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday on the sidelines of the 26th Session of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of State in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
The meeting was held during Prime Minister Sharif’s three-day official visit to Kyrgyzstan from August 31 to September 2, at the invitation of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Nurgozhoevich Zhaparov. This year’s SCO summit coincides with the organisation’s 25th anniversary.
The Pakistani delegation included Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Syed Tariq Fatemi and Foreign Secretary Ambassador Amna Baloch. Iran’s delegation included Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and other senior officials.
During the meeting, the two leaders reaffirmed the longstanding ties between Pakistan and Iran and discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

They reviewed progress on decisions reached during President Pezeshkian’s official visit to Pakistan in June 2026 and discussed opportunities for improving regional connectivity and people-to-people exchanges.
Prime Minister Sharif invited President Pezeshkian to undertake an official visit to Pakistan at his convenience. The Iranian president, in turn, invited Prime Minister Sharif to attend the upcoming Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) Summit, scheduled to take place in Tehran in December 2026.
The meeting took place as Prime Minister Sharif is holding a series of bilateral engagements with leaders attending the SCO summit in Bishkek.
Pakistan is also set to assume the rotating chairmanship of the SCO Council of Heads of State for 2026–27 following the summit and is expected to host the next Council session in Islamabad in 2027.
