Son of Pakistan’s First Sikh MBBS Doctor Secures Top Position in Lahore Matric Exams

Like Father, Like Son: Sikh Doctor's Family Marks Another Milestone in Lahore

Onkar Singh, son of Pakistan's first Sikh MBBS doctor, has secured joint second position in the Science Group (Boys) category of this year's matriculation examinations conducted by the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) Lahore.
A student at Crescent Model Higher Secondary School for Boys, Shadman, Onkar scored 1,189 marks out of 1,200 a tally matched by Muhammad Ayan of Crescent Kids Campus High School for Boys, Allama Iqbal Town. Muhammad Qasim of Punjab Daanish High School, Fazilpur, Rajanpur, topped the board with 1,191 marks.

The result builds on Onkar's record of consistent academic performance; he had secured second position in his ninth-grade annual examinations in 2025.
Onkar credited his success to his parents' prayers, his teachers' guidance, and sustained effort of his own. He said he hopes to become a doctor and serve humanity through medicine, following in the footsteps of his father.
His father, Professor Dr Mimpal Singh, holds the distinction of being the first Sikh MBBS doctor in Pakistan's history. He was awarded the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz by the Government of Pakistan in 2023 in recognition of his public service and contribution to inter-faith harmony, and currently serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at King Edward Medical University (KEMU), attached to Mayo Hospital, Lahore.

Speaking after the announcement, Dr Mimpal Singh said his son's achievement reflected the merit-based nature of Pakistan's education system, in which students are evaluated strictly on performance.
Onkar, for his part, called for reforms to improve the education system and urged the government to expand employment opportunities for young graduates. He added that minority communities in Pakistan enjoy full rights and protection, and that students from all backgrounds can succeed through hard work and equal access to education.
The news brought a wave of joy among the Sikh community across Pakistan, with well-wishers streaming into the family's residence throughout the day to offer their congratulations. Among those who called on Dr Mimpal Singh to felicitate him on his son's historic achievement were Giani Ranjit Singh, Head Granthi of Gurdwara Dera Sahib; Jathedar Sardar Pritam Singh; and former Punjab Assembly member Sardar Mahendra Pal Singh, who also served as Parliamentary Secretary for Minority Affairs and Human Rights, Government of Punjab, and is a central leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
