Indian Yatree Sarabjit Kaur (Noor Hussain) Refuses to Return to India; Deportation Process Initiated but Temporarily Stopped for Enquiries
Lahore / Wagah Border – January 5, 2026
Pakistani federal immigration authorities have taken Indian yatree Sarabjit Kaur (who adopted the name Noor Hussain after converting to Islam and marrying local resident Nasir Hussain) into custody. She is currently held by federal government immigration officials following her arrest on January 4, 2026, in Pehre Wali village near Nankana Sahib by a joint team of Pakistan's Intelligence Bureau and local police.
Current Status: Sarabjit Kaur (Noor Hussain), 52, from Amanipur village, Kapurthala (Punjab, India), remains in custody. The deportation process to India via the Wagah-Attari border has been initiated due to the expiry of her single-entry pilgrim visa (expired November 14, 2025, after arrival on November 4 as part of a Sikh jatha for Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birth anniversary). However, the immediate deportation has been temporarily stopped/halted by immigration authorities pending completion of further enquiries and legal formalities.
Refusal to Return: Sarabjit Kaur has refused to return to India voluntarily. She has expressed her desire to stay in Pakistan with her husband, stating that her conversion to Islam and marriage on November 5, 2025, were of her own free will (supported by a viral video statement and nikahnama). She has cited fears for her safety in India, alleging potential persecution and lack of security for Muslims under the current government.
Deportation Timeline: Reports indicate she has been moved toward the Wagah border area for possible handover to Indian authorities (BSF) after a flag meeting. Deportation could occur tomorrow morning (January 6, 2026) or shortly thereafter, once all enquiries and procedural requirements are fully completed. No confirmation of actual crossing has occurred as of now.
PTI Leader Mahendra Pal Singh’s Statement: The former Punjab Assembly member, who filed a petition in the Lahore High Court against her alleged illegal stay, has called the initiation of deportation proceedings a “victory of law.” He continues to demand a full, transparent inquiry into the visa overstay, security implications, and circumstances of her extended stay.
Key Background Recap:
Sarabjit Kaur arrived in Pakistan on November 4, 2025, with a large Sikh pilgrimage group.
She reportedly converted to Islam, married Nasir Hussain on November 5, and went into hiding while the rest of the group returned to India on November 13.
The case drew attention after a Lahore High Court petition highlighted visa violations.
Officials from the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) and other authorities are involved in supervising the process.
The situation remains fluid, with ongoing enquiries by Pakistani federal immigration authorities. Indian officials are on standby at the Attari side for any handover. Further developments could change the timeline quickly.
