A special general meeting of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) was held today at Teja Singh Samundri Hall. During the meeting, members endorsed the decision of Sri Akal Takht Sahib declaring Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann as Guru Dokhi and Khalsa Panth Virodhi.

The meeting resolved that, in accordance with Sikh tradition, a large Panthic gathering would be organized on July 5, 2026, at Gurdwara Sri Manji Sahib Diwan Hall to spread awareness among Sikh congregations regarding the Sri Akal Takht Sahi's directives. It was also decided to launch major campaigns in every constituency and send preaching groups to motivate Sikhs to firmly uphold these directives.

The meeting, led by SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, was attended by senior Sikh religious leaders, Jathedars and representatives from five Takhts, granthis of Sri Harmandar Sahib, SGPC office-bearers, and members.

Addressing the gathering, Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj, Acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, said that Sri Akal Takht Sahib is the supreme authority for Sikhs, and obeying its directives is every Sikh's duty. He said chief minister Bhagwant Singh’s challenge to Sri Akal Takht Sahib orders reflects his attitude toward Sikh institutions. The Governments are continuously attempting to gain direct control over Sikh institutions, therefore, the Khalsa Panth must unite and strongly oppose such attempts. Weakening Sikh institutions would cause severe harm to the Sikh community, he said.

SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami said that the current Punjab government's agenda targets Panthic institutions. He said statements made by Chief Minister against Sikh institutions reveal his mindset and it is SGPC's responsibility to make Sikhs aware of Sri Akal Takht Sahib directives. He said invitations for the July 5 gathering will be sent to all Sikh sampradas and organizations.

Several SGPC members also reaffirmed their commitment to strongly support and uphold Sri Akal Takht Sahib's directives.

Resolutions Passed During Special General Meeting

A resolution stated that a video showing chief minister Bhagwant Singh disrespecting images of Sikh Gurus and Sikh leader Sant Giani Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale caused widespread anger among Sikhs worldwide. CM Bhagwant Singh’s action was described as a serious and unforgivable mistake. Sri Akal Takht Sahib's action in taking notice of the matter was also endorsed and it was said that respect for Sikh Gurus, traditions, martyrs, and Sikh codes of conduct is supreme for Sikhs. It said any insult toward Sikh symbols or representations deeply hurts Sikh sentiments. Rather than acknowledging his mistake before Akal Takht Sahib, CM is repeatedly making false statements and disrespecting the highest temporal Sikh authority.

The resolution further emphasized that Sri Akal Takht Sahib, established by Guru Hargobind Sahib, remains the supreme religious and Panthic authority of Sikhs. Respecting and following its directives is the collective responsibility of the Sikh community. A chief minister should demonstrate sensitivity toward Punjab's religious and cultural traditions.

The meeting concluded that legal action and a police case would be pursued against Bhagwant Singh. He no longer possesses the moral authority to remain chief minister and should resign immediately.

The SGPC resolved to conduct large-scale awareness campaigns in every constituency. Preaching groups traveling for Sikh outreach would also encourage Sikhs to firmly support Sri Akal Takht Sahib's directives against CM Bhagwant Singh.

A major Panthic gathering on July 5, 2026 at Gurdwara Sri Manji Sahib Diwan Hall was formally announced. The meeting will include Sikh organizations, Damdami Taksal, Nihang jathebandis, Singh Sabhas, Sikh federations, Gurdwara committees, Sikh scholars and intellectuals and various Sikh sampradas and religious groups

Another resolution strongly objected to the Maharashtra government's decision to repeal and proposal to replace the 1956 Act governing Takht Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib, Nanded.

The resolution argued that no interference should occur in the religious autonomy, administration, or traditions of Sikh Takhts. The government's move was viewed as an attempt to increase state influence in Gurdwara administration. The Maharashtra government was urged to immediately stop changing or amending the 1956 Act and preserve it in its original form.
