ISLAMABAD/TEHRAN — April 15, 2026:
Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, arrived in Tehran on Wednesday leading a high-level delegation as Islamabad works to keep US-Iran diplomacy alive after the first round of talks ended without a breakthrough.
Munir is carrying a message from Washington and is expected to meet Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to discuss arrangements for a second round of negotiations. The visit highlights Pakistan’s role as a rare communication bridge between the two rivals.

The previous round of talks in Islamabad lasted several hours but ended without agreement. Both sides remain divided on key issues, particularly Iran’s uranium enrichment and US demands for strict limits, verification, and removal of highly enriched stockpiles. However, diplomatic channels remain open.
Munir has emerged as a central figure in Pakistan’s mediation efforts, maintaining working relations with both Washington and Tehran. Pakistan’s geography, shared border with Iran, and lack of US bases provide it with a unique diplomatic position.
The stakes remain high for Pakistan. Any escalation could disrupt Gulf energy supplies, increase oil prices, affect remittances, and create instability along the Pakistan-Iran border. A second round of talks may take place in Islamabad or Geneva.
